Regulations for Master's Program Students at the Graduate Institute of History, National Central University
Article 1:These regulations are formulated in accordance with the "University Regulations" and the "Doctoral and Master's Degree Examination Regulations" of the University.
Article 2: Study Duration:The duration of study is from two to four years. Leave of absence is processed according to Articles 38 and 40 of the "University Regulations."
Article 3: Course Requirements:Detailed requirements are according to the curriculum plan of the Master's program.
1. The minimum graduation requirement is 24 credits.
2. Except for the 0-credit compulsory "Research and Practice" for first-year Master's students, students must take 9 credits from the Taiwanese History course group and 9 credits from the Chinese History course group. The remaining 6 credits can be taken from other courses within the Institute. If choosing courses outside the Institute or from other universities, only one course per semester is allowed.
3. Students with an undergraduate degree in a non-history related field must take the 3-credit "Historiography" course.
4. Courses related to history taken at other universities must comply with the inter-university course selection regulations and cannot count towards the 9 credits required for either the Taiwanese or Chinese History course groups.
Article 4: Credit Transfer:
1. Processed according to the University's "Credit Transfer Regulations" and the Institute's "Graduate Credit Transfer Regulations."
2. Courses from other related departments at the Master's level can be credited towards the Institute's professional elective graduation credits with the approval of the Institute Director, up to two courses or six credits.
Article 5: Thesis Supervision:
1. Students can submit a list of potential supervisors and thesis topics two weeks after the first Institute Council meeting following their admission. The latest submission is before the end of the first academic year's second semester final exams.
2. Changing supervisors requires the consent of both the original supervisor and the Institute Director.
3. If a non-regular faculty member is to be the thesis supervisor, it requires the Institute Director's consent, and co-supervision by a regular faculty member within the Institute.
Article 6: Seminars and Special Lectures:
1. Prior to the thesis oral defense, students must participate in required seminars (including workshops) and special lectures organized by academic institutions both domestic and international.
2. Participation in seminars is required at least four times, with one being the Institute's "Thesis Research Proposal Presentation."
3. At least 36 hours of participation in special lecture activities are required, with up to 12 hours allowed from external events. If historical works are published in academic journals during the study period, half of the required hours can be waived (proof of publication or acceptance must be provided, with book reviews waiving only one-quarter of the hours).
4. Activities must be verified by the Institute Director on the "Verification Form" and submitted with related documents to the Institute office before applying for the thesis oral defense.
Article 7: Degree Examination:
Includes thesis research proposal review and oral defense.
1. **Thesis Format:** Must be approved by the supervisor and conform to the following:
- Research thesis: Main text should be at least 40,000 words.
- Non-research thesis, such as oral history, documentaries, or other public history and applied history formats, must be approved by the supervisor.
2. **Thesis Research Proposal Review:**
- Students must submit their research proposal for review at least six months before the thesis defense date.
- The review is conducted by the supervisor and two other professors in an open oral examination, one of whom must be external to the Institute or university.
- The result is pass or fail. Only those who pass can apply for the thesis oral defense.
- If the supervisor certifies and signs the waiver of the proposal review, the review can be waived.
3. **Thesis Oral Defense:**
- Eligibility: Students who expect to complete all requirements in the current semester may apply.
- Application deadline is in accordance with university regulations.
- If unable to complete the defense within the semester due to any reason, students must withdraw their application before the end of the academic calendar's semester deadline. Failure to do so will be considered a failure for that attempt.
- The thesis oral defense committee is selected by the supervisor and processed according to university regulations.
- Students must submit a typed and properly bound draft of the thesis to the committee members at least two weeks before the defense.
- The oral defense must be reviewed by at least three scholars with relevant expertise, including at least one external member. The supervisor is an ex-officio member. The passing score is 70.
- Master's theses (including abstracts) must conform to the university's thesis format guidelines. After passing the degree examination, the abstract and full text must be uploaded electronically within the specified deadline and three copies of the thesis must be submitted (one for the Institute, one for the university library, and one for the Ministry of Education as required).
- If plagiarism or fraud is found in the thesis, it will be considered a failure, and the case will be referred to the university's student disciplinary committee.
- If the degree examination is not passed and the study period has not expired, the student may apply for a re-examination in the next semester or academic year, limited to one re-examination. Failure in the re-examination will result in dismissal from the program.
Article 8: If plagiarism or fraud is discovered in the thesis of a conferred Master's degree, the university will revoke the degree and recover the diploma according to relevant regulations after verification.
Article 9: Matters not covered by these regulations shall be handled in accordance with the relevant regulations of the Ministry of Education and the university.
Article 10: These regulations, upon approval by the Institute Council, shall be submitted to the Academic Affairs Council for ratification.
